Drink Your Veggies for Weight Loss and Health!

I love juicing! It’s changed my life and almost every morning unless I’m traveling, my husband and I start our day with a fresh vegetable juice! A lot of people have said to me, “you don’t seem to change at all, you look the same or better than you did 20 years ago!” What’s your secret? And I say, “good thoughts and good nourishment” and daily vegetable juice is at the core of the good nourishment! My husband was skeptical about juicing (he never thought he’d be able to do it) but 2 years ago after trying everything to lose extra pounds he gave in and started doing 3 day juice cleanses with me. He lost 30 pounds and has easily been able to keep it off and he loves juicing so much now he’s always asking me, “when are we going to do another cleanse?”

Juicing can help you lose weight and increase your health and vitality because, raw foods contain something that cannot be found in cooked food: live enzymes and juicing is the easiest way to flood your body with them.

Enzymes are the catalyst for every human function. We were born with the capacity to produce a great deal of enzymes and started life with a huge enzyme “bank account.” However, the standard cooked American fare uses up enzymes during the digestion process without replacing them. Over time we become enzyme impoverished. We perceive this as our metabolism slowing as we age, but it’s really because we are becoming enzyme deficient.

Enzymes are your body’s workers. They clean up all the garbage and waste that slows your body down, makes you feel sick, tired and sluggish and packs on the extra pounds. The more enzymes you take in through eating raw plant food, the more fuel you will have to complete the chores that your body must do to keep you in a vibrant, healthy and youthful state.

Here’s another way to look at the importance of enzymes. We are living beings but a lot of us consume mostly food that is dead – or cooked. Ask yourself, how can dead food, sustain living beings without making those beings less vibrant? The more live food we eat the more vibrant or “full of life” we are.

If you’re skeptical about all of this, I invite you to try adding more raw fruits and vegetables to your diet and see for yourself how much better you’ll feel. A simple way to start doing this is to start your day with a freshly juiced vegetable drink and then add a large raw vegetable salad to your lunch and dinner. Studies now show that drinking freshly juiced vegetables can triple your weight loss and women who have the highest intakes of phyto-chemicals had body fat levels that were 46 percent lower than those that took in the least! So drink up your veggies! Here’s my favorite recipe.

What if 2017 Was the Best Year of My Life?

2017I love New Years’ Day! To me it feels like a chance at a fresh start, a new beginning. This day feels full of promise and excitement and an opportunity to create the best year of my life so far. For quite some time now I no longer make New Years’ resolutions. They never felt good to me, they just felt like another list of things that “I should do.” And so, usually by the time a few weeks passed, I stopped doing them. A few years ago I started something I called, “setting my New Years’ intentions.” “Setting my New Years’ intentions” starts off with a very general statement of me saying, “2017 is going to be the best year of my life so far!” And then I start asking myself how would I feel if I was having the best year of my life? This is what came to me for this bright and shiny new year of 2017.

If 2017 Was the Best Year of My Life…

  • I would wake up each morning excited about the possibilities that this new day might bring.
  • I would appreciate and focus on all the wonderful things that are good and are working in my life.
  • I would look for the best in everyone I know and everyone I meet.
  • I would expect good things to happen to me and those I love.
  • I would trust that there is a greater plan and hand at work in all things.
  • I would trust that everything is always unfolding perfectly.
  • I would have more faith
  • I would be kinder
  • I would laugh more
  • I would love more
  • I would pray more
  • I would play more
  • I would remember that everything I need is already inside of me.
  • I would remember that I am never alone, always loved, eternally supported and no matter how it seems in the moment, everything is always working out for me!

I would remember that I hold the key and the power to create the best year of my life. I exercise that power by how I focus my thoughts. I would remember that whatever I put my focus on is what I get more of, and so I would be very careful about what I place my attention on. I would put my attention on the things that are good and are right and that I want to create more of and so allow myself to experience 2017 as the Best Year of my life, so far!

Happy New Year everyone! I wish you all the Best Year of your life, so far!

The Price of Resentment

“Holding on to resentment is like drinking poison
and expecting the other person to die.”

The holiday season is quickly descending upon us. For some of us, it a wonderful time of love, laughter and Joy – gathering together with family and friends to celebrate, give thanks and appreciate those that mean the most to us. But for others it’s not so happy, not the “perfect ideal picture” that the movies and advertisements show us.

The truth is, for most of us the Holidays can be somewhat stressful and evoke a mixed bag of feelings. A lot of us gather with and travel back to our families of origin and this can bring up unresolved negative emotions from past hurts. Also, if we are grieving a loss through death, divorce, breakup or separation, the Holidays can really magnify the feelings connected to that.

resentmentWhatever the reasons may be, the Holiday Season can be a emotional roller coaster for some of us. There’s a whole possible range of emotions that you might be feeling but I want to talk about the one I feel is most detrimental to you, resentment.

Resentment is that emotion we feel when we believe that someone has wronged us, hurt us, treated us unfairly – did something unforgivable. Quite often we are totally justified in our feelings. They did what they did, said what they said and it hurt us – it was unfair, we didn’t deserve it and they were wrong! But here’s the thing, even if you are totally justified in how you feel, that resentment is not hurting them it’s hurting you!

Resentment keeps us stuck in the past, powerless and unable to move forward towards what we want. Louise Hay, in her book You Can Heal Your Life says, “long held, deep resentment can literally eat away at the body and cause the dis-ease we call cancer.” Even our western medical system now says that 90% of diseases have an “emotional” component connected to them.

Unfortunately, I’m not a stranger to resentment, I know it well. I went through a very difficult divorce 15 years ago and I had a bucket load of resentment. When I was finally able to release it, freed me to move on and find the man of my dreams and create the deliciously, satisfy and wonderful life that I’m now living.

If resentment is eating away at you, it’s possible to let it go and free yourself. Here’s my favorite process for releasing resentment. I call it the “Poison Pen Letter Process”

The Poison Pen Process

  1. First you are going to write a letter to whoever hurt you and who you feel resentment towards.
  2. Write it with pen & paper, not on your computer. There is a special magic that happens when you put pen to paper!
  3. Don’t hold back! You are not going to send this, so let it rip! The purpose is to vent and rage and acknowledge and express how you really feel. You need to get all the negative emotion up and out. You can’t release what you don’t fully feel.
  4. Once you write the letter. You are going to read it out loud while you do EFT Tapping. If you don’t know how to tap, watch my video and download my guide.
  5. Every time you reach a spot in the letter where you feel strong emotion you are going to stop and just tap focusing on that emotion (for example: “it hurts so much”) until you feel that emotion release. Then move on and continue reading your letter until you hit another emotional “zing”.
  6. Keep reading the letter over and over while you tap until you can read through it without feeling strong emotions.
  7. Once you clear all your negative emotions from your letter. Rip it up into little pieces and either dump it into the trash or put it into a fire proof container and go outside and burn it releasing it to the universe.

The Stress Response and How it Affects You

stressedThe other day I ran into an old friend that I haven’t seen for a long time. They said to me something to me that I’ve heard many times before, “I don’t know how you do it but it looks like you get younger, not older every time I see you.” “How do you do it?” I replied by saying, “thanks so much – and it’s because I’m really happy, life is really good and I practice really good self-care.”

Later that day I was ruminating on what my friend said, and realized that the self-care piece came before the happiness part. I have a happy, healthy and wonderful life because I take the time every day to practice good “self-care” habits.  I know, this is radical thinking for overworked/overwhelmed women but I have found personally and professionally that, “if we are not selfish enough to take care of ourselves first, we have nothing of value to give to anyone else.” And our health, happiness, relationships and success suffer!

There are many ways that I practice good self-care but what I’ve learned over the years is, the most important thing that we can do for ourselves and our health and happiness is to practice “good emotional hygiene” by calming the stress response.

We’ve all heard about the stress response and how damaging it can be to our health. When we are “stressed out” our bodies are being flooded with the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline. Over time the constant flood of these hormones can cause premature aging, weight gain, sleep disruptions, mild to serious health problems and interfere with our success, relationships and happiness.

Here’s how it works. When you are experiencing stress, the part of your brain that is called the amygdala goes on alert. The amygdala is like the body’s internal smoke detector, it’s job is to keep you safe and it takes this job very seriously! When strong negative emotions are present like when your experiencing stress, the amygdala prepares your body to enter a full-blown, fight-or-flight response.

When the Amygdala senses danger it turns on all of the body’s defense systems in order to be ready to meet the perceived life or death challenge. It immediately starts pumping cortisol and adrenaline, tenses your muscles and raises your blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar all to be ready to meet the challenge. This response evolved to mobilize the body to face external threats – like a tiger coming to eat your ancient ancestor.

While this is very helpful if you need to run for your life, it is not so helpful in our modern day to day living. Unfortunately, these same responses get trigged many times each day when we’re faced with daily hassles, upsets, annoyances and worries.

On top of that, our internal patterns of negative thoughts and worries also trigger the fight or flight response and over time this can leave us worn down, sick, depressed, overweight, stressed out and unable to access the creative and problems solving parts of our brain.

Until stress is fully released, it stays lodged in your body and in your cells, running rampant, putting your health and happiness at risk.

Here’s how stress damages your health, your life, relationships, waistline, and more:

  1. You think about something stressful—work, money, relationships, family, what ever’s bothering you.
  2. Your amygdala (in your mid-brain) senses danger.
  3. Your amygdala helps to initiate your body’s fight-or-flight response to stress.
  4. In “fight or flight”, your body releases adrenaline and the “stress hormone” cortisol, diverts blood away from your digestive tract, leaving you less able to digest food and absorb nutrients AND more likely to gain weight.
  5. In this physiological “crisis mode,” you’re more vulnerable to pain—from chronic illness, arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraines, stomach upset, and more.
  6. In this state of heightened physiological “alert”, your brain’s creative center is deemed “non-essential” and shuts down. Down goes your problem solving, your creative skills, your intuition.
  7. You feel increasingly irritable, isolated and impatient. Your relationships suffer.
  8. Stress affects your sleep. Your metabolism slows.
  9. Your body secretes even more cortisol, wreaking more havoc on your digestion (and waist line), increasing your blood pressure, lowering your immune response.
  10. After releasing too much cortisol for too long, your body goes into “adrenal fatigue.” You feel depleted, exhausted, and depressed.
  11. You no longer have the energy to adhere to your exercise routine, your healthy eating, meditation, yoga. Migraines, insomnia, stress-related hair loss, chronic pain, and any number of other issues become regular parts of your life.
  12. Battling low energy, you can hardly focus at work, and elsewhere. Your relationships suffer.
  13. Your depression deepens. You (and your body) are STRESSED OUT.

Not only does this get in the way of you feeling happy and good in your daily life, it gets in the way of you moving forward and being successful in making your dreams a reality. This is because when we are in a state of fight or flight the survival part of our brain is in charge and we don’t have full access to the creative and problem solving parts of our brain – and that limits us and holds us back and keeps us stuck!

My absolute favorite tool for calming the stress response is EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique or Tapping. Tapping works by sending a calming response through the bodies energy system that turns off the stress response and tells the amygdala that all is well and safe.
